To hear his response came as a surprise.

Most of this era showed no sign of chivalry to those who shared life with them. Perhaps she had become too accustomed of her time in war, the men treating her just as they would to any other man — as she had worn male attire, it was easier for them to imagine her as such which reduced the risk of their lust for a woman in times of battle — if he were to do the same. Women had little place, shocking for her to be allowed to march along with no punishment.

You are of kind spirit to grant forgiveness with such graceful ease. It be my thanks I giveth now, as I shan’t receive this from but anyone.

A small bow of her head would suffice — to think if he knew the origins of the person thanking him in this way, too.

His next question was nothing to be wary of, easily answered with no information given that he wasn’t permitted to know. Indeed, it doth be the hour of arrival. Summoned I have been, yet astray I have fallen. Thou hast plentiful knowledge of this landscape, if assumption be true?

No hesitation was given as she lifted to point in the general direction of where he was leaving to the apartments in which his own lay. What he wished to think of it would be his own mind’s doing, as coincidence merely had her meeting here. There had been a suspicious figure straying from their war zone she intended to check to uphold the rules, something dire in her existence.

My direction be of this way, mazes of concrete blocking to which I go. Thou shalt lend help if time is of bountiful givings, shall thee? Of thee it be all I ask, and return thy favor, I shall, if it be doable request.

Without yet following the pointing finger to the end, the general direction was already too close to home. Reluctantly, his head moved to confirm what else could be over in that direction. He was hoping to find a distinctive-looking building, anything, that could be of interest and that could lure away the doubt in his mind. However, before him, all there were, were grey skyscrapers that went on to the horizon.

What are the odds, what are the odds...?’ The probabilities were recalculated in his mind. It was impossible. Was Celty even home? Was she over in that direction? What else could possibly invite a foreigner dressed in Celtic armor to this town?!

“There is no need to paint me with such honor!” He began, with the same friendly smile. “I have time on hand and I know this city by heart, so I would be glad to help. Just…”

“Just, I would like you to confirm what it is that you are seeking. Hopefully, it isn’t inconvenient for you to disclose your reasons. I’m ready to help out, but… well, certainly, you have heard of Troy.” A pause. While he was aware that his excuse to find out more about her would have sounded strange to a modern man’s ear, he could only gamble with the idea that this woman wouldn’t be too unfamiliar with this type of deal, considering her already extraordinary appearance and speech.

“Oh! Please, don’t get me wrong. I suppose… this is more to quench my curiosity.”

Buildings of such magnitude were not ones she had been used to growing up. Estranged as she was, she wished not to display her features of new visions within plain sight. Being updated was a natural occurrence for servants regardless of links to a master or not; this world would be viewed in their knowledge, yet not lived in until their explorations. Unfortunate for most as they had no time to travel and see all that this modern day had to offer.

Of all servants, however, she was of the lucky few who had spare time.

No master called for her, the desire never entering her heart to return for a granted wish. There had been no reason to be returned to this world, her soul with no regrets in the years that she lived. The Holy Grail was the one who commanded her, lending her the power she needed to manifest in order to maintain the rules of this war, dedicated to uphold them with every ounce of her manifestation.

For now she had brought herself to merely explore, keeping a weather eye on the status of the servants she knew of the war she had been summoned to. Others, unfortunately, came not to her attention so quickly — a bump into an unfamiliar man as she teetered to the side with grace. A pause as she glanced to the brunette, a small bow of her head in silent apology.

My apologies, for the fault be mine. Distraction hath come o’er me and the end result given to thee upon accident.

Milk, bread, fried tofu, a few new pens and some batteries; that was the ‘to buy’ list for the day. It was nothing grand, but it marked the peaceful everyday life that he was having. Ah, if things could go on like this forever, or at least until his death, it would be true bliss. Folding the small sheet back into his pocket, he quickened his pace, intending to catch the green light.

However, he came to sudden stop when a strange figure appeared in his sight. A foreigner dressed in a battle armor stood too distinctively on the other side of the road. It was rather common to see costumed youths around this part of town, but he was ready to doubt that theory.

He, who was mesmerized, could not keep his eyes off she, who noticed not his existence. He was mesmerized… through fear.

Shinra was only a normal human, no more gifted than anyone else. He possessed no supernatural powers nor any keen senses but with a single glance, he knew that he was looking at a being larger than life. And he feared her for that exact reason.

The young doctor’s mind were filled with calculations over the probability that this woman has come to take Celty away.

Still, the possibility that this woman was of no relations to Celty still existed, which was the reason why his legs had stopped moving. If she was just like anyone else, she would simply walk past him. Turning his head to the side, he dared not to look or to move.

For refusing to walk away, it was then that the woman suddenly bumped into him, but quickly apologized afterwards. “Ah… “

“Aah, that is no problem at all! It’s a busy town and it’s all bound to happen.” He took on his more normal and carefree tone to cover the anxiety. “With an armor like that, I can see how it is difficult to move around. Are you going anywhere?”

That… Wasn’t really what she was expecting. It took her by surprise, really, though she knew somewhere in the back of her mind that she probably should have expected someone who she was guessing was some kind of geeky professional would be all about the prim and proper social conventions of casual chitchat instead of, you know, mindless flirting.

Hah? You’re kidding, right?” It didn’t seem like he was, unfortunately. Panty regarded his little camera friend with nothing short of a well-aimed glare and slumped back against the bench, biting the side of her lip. As far as conversation went, she had a bit of a one-track mind; keeping up casual chitchat was by far the blonde’s strong suit.

Nonetheless, it would be a shame to waste the company of the only other attractive guy she’d laid her eyes on since arriving, no matter how much she’d rather send him and his little camera on their merry way.

“Nah, if you ask me, this place is just as boring as the rest of this fuckin’ shithole. Nothin’ wrong with a pretty young guy like you showing up, though. Dunno, maybe you’ll spice things up a bit.” She wasn’t stupid enough to think that her ‘advances’ were actually getting her anywhere, not with how cheerfully oblivious the male seemed to be, but it was almost second nature by now, to the point where Panty barely noticed her little wanton compliments sneaking in.

The angel sniffed once, louder than would otherwise be appropriate, and scratched at her cheek absently. Whether or not her expression belied how uninterested she was in discussing the local area didn’t seem to matter much to her. “Oi, coat boy. Wanna give me your name?”

Turning the camera to on, he began a few test shoots to adjust the settings. Even still listening to her, his eyes never moved from the small screen. he way she talked made him let out a chuckle. She had… interesting choices of words; blunt and daring. A little bit more and her style would have reminded him of Shizuo on his less better days.

“I know the feeling, but fortunately for me, I found my source of excitement.” Shinra gave the woman a glance from the corner of his eyes. “A lot of rumors have been circulating and I’m sure the ones I’m investigating have reached these shores. Some classify these stories as urban legends and then move on with their lives. On my side, I’m quite interested in what people have to say.”

His chatter had to come to a halt when he received the little scolding. ”Hah, ah yes, I’m Shinra. Nice to meet you. I wonder if I’ll also have the pleasure of learning your name? —Oh, by the way, I’m not really into the occult. On normal days, I’m just a small self-employed doctor.” Unless the blonde was to reappear in his life, that much information was about enough. If this would be considered as an exchange of information, then perhaps he could finally ask her more about his object of interest.

“Say, do you believe in angels?”

“Angels of death, specifically. What if they still roamed our modern streets?”

ilegene:

He was going to help her! How great Nanako thought. She might be able to find her father a lot quicker than she thought! Well, hopefully. She just felt an eensy tiny bit scared being alone in the city.

What he looks like? How would she describe him… she couldn’t quite put a finger on it, nor find the words to describe her father, but she could try.

“Um…” Fidgeting with the edge of her dress, she starts describing her father.

“He’s thiiiis tall,” Nanako then stands on the tips of toes, stretching her arms as high as she could trying to show the man how tall her father is, “and he has um… hair on his face… And he’s a detective!”

That should do it, right? It didn’t quite feel right, she could describe him a lot better. But what else could she say for the man to decipher her father? Ah, she’s got it! What he’s wearing!! She forgot to tell him that, she only told him how tall he was, his job, and if he had facial hair or not.

“Oh he’s also wearing a red tie, a grey dress shirt and black pants! Is that enough Mister?”

Looking hopefully at the doctor, the young girl hoped that he would be able to find her father with the description she had given him.

Smiling, Shinra watched her gestures as she tried to describe her father. It was all so endearing. It was almost heartwarming to see that regular people had such a relationship with their parents.

“A… detective.” Wasn’t that bad news? It was then that he began to doubt the girl’s words. He did not doubt her specifically, but what if even she was made to believe that she was lost? What if this innocent looking girl was purposely and temporarily abandoned to lure out criminals? It wasn’t as if Shinra labelled himself as one, but there were a few things that he indeed could not declare in his yearly tax return. Also, technically, he had just walked out of a building owned by the shadier people.

Obviously, the children that he met were never regular ones. He had to care for a mafia princess once and now he had to deal with a detective’s child. Again, he took another look into the moving crowd around them. His objects of attention weren’t worried adults anymore, but he was not looking for anyone who could be observing them. As much as the young doctor pitied her right now, perhaps it would be best to rid of her as soon as possible.

“Heh, he sounds like quite an admirable person. I’m sure he shouldn’t be too far off. When you’re lost, it’s best to stay somewhere visible instead of wandering around. I’m sure your dad is looking for you too, so let’s wait, alright?”

On second though, a better strategy would be to act normally. “How about sitting on that bench over there? What do you think?”

ilegene:

Standing alone in the big city, Nanako looks around hoping to find her father. Somehow she had gotten lost within the big city, she didn’t know how. She had childish mind even if she were mature, she still was a little girl.

Standing in once place wouldn’t help her father find her, nor would going off to find him would help her either. Both could result her in getting even more lost, there was quite a crowd of people around. Pondering, she thinks of ways to find her father. Look for a policeman? No, she didn’t know her way through the city! She was only knew about Inaba, she and her dad had came to the city for leisure and enjoyment. She could look for a reliable person! Yes, that’ll work, maybe then she’ll be able to find her father and go home!

Once more she looks around, hoping there would be someone available to help her. She notices a man in a white labcoat, it was easy to spot him in such a colourful arrangement of colours. A doctor she inferred from his labcoat, doctors are dependable right? They help you feel better and make all those owies go away! Her face brightens up, finally finding someone who could probably assist her in finding her father.

Weaving through the crowd, she catches up to the man.

“Um… sir?” Nanako pulls on the man’s pristine white labcoat to gain his attention. “Can you help me find my dad?”

Shades of red were slowly covering the whole sky. After a hard day’s work, it was about the right time to head home. The young man, with suitcase in hand, walked out of a seemingly normal building. It was only a few steps out of the place that he finally realized that he had forgotten something.

“Ah… one of the men borrowed the scalpel number 23 and I never got it back.” Shinra murmured to himself. It was a shame that he had to leave a tool behind and if it ever fell into the wrong hands, things could become complicated. And by ‘wrong hands’, he thought more of the law enforcers. If that evidence ever found its way to him, it could mean trouble, but at the same time, the patients that he had just operated today were not a bunch that he wished to see often.

Those were the kind of criminal thoughts that occupied this good-hearted citizen when a smaller figure came to his attention.

“Hm? What is it?” Shinra crouched to the little girl’s eye level. It so happened that she was lost… Well, well. Doing a good deed today wouldn’t hurt.

“Sure! What does he look like?” He asked as he quickly scanned the crowd all around, in case he could find an adult looking frantic.

[panty ♂ shinra] surgeoninlove started following you.

paraladi:

Panty didn’t sit behind desks, she sat atop benches. Clean, pristine, wooden benches in the middle of clean, pristine, wood-filled parks spotted with high-standing trees and the occasional kid passing by, a leg poised over another and an arm resting languidly along the edge of her spot. With no ghosts around and no sign of her beloved sister kicking her ass to heaven and back, there was nothing to keep the blonde from sitting back and getting some well earned rest once in a while.

“The hell’s goin’ on now? I was finally about to get some damn sleep and you just walk straight up all high ‘n’ mighty like you own the fuckin’ place,” she groaned, slumping forward. She rested her elbows on her knees and flicked her hair back with a shake of her head, before her narrowed, skeptical gaze sized up the male in question from head to toe. Normally, she wouldn’t care either way about who was disturbing what peace or what strange creature her eyes happened to find, but three distinct things stuck out about the stranger she had zeroed in on:

  1. La-la-labcoat. All the better for crawling into up close and personal spaces, even if it was a terribly unfortunate shade of white. Besides that, those were awfully professional, weren’t they? She did like a guy with a nice head.
  2. Glasses. Eh, why not. They were removable, lenses were replaceable, and fumbling in the dark did happen to have its perks now and then.
  3. Long-ish hair. Attractive.

Three simple observations that made her initial idea of the guy do a 180. A smile pulled at the corner of her lips and she straightened up — slightly, as though she was doing nothing more than watching some sort of pet for amusement.

“Ooh, well then…! What’s up, smartypants? See anything you like?”

The mission that Shinra was on right now was the inspection of a potential location for a date. Since Celty rejected his invitation to leave for overseas, then the other logical solution would be to make her feel like home never left her. Certainly, the greens of this country could calm her longing for the Irish home.

The young man was so completely absorbed in his plans that when a fierce voice reached his ears, he felt a jolt in his body that could have shortened his lifespan.

The rough tone that he thought he heard turned out to be a very inviting and playful one. Now, did he see anything that he liked? “Ah, definitely!”

To meet a person who was interested in his field research, now that was rare. He looked around him: it would still take quite a bit of walk to finally reach the exit of this park. Since there was a volunteering company here, he might as well drop his equipment for a moment and let his strained shoulders rest. Work could still be done here.

“I much prefer the urban landscape actually, but getting Tokyo out of my lungs every once in a while isn’t bad.” Setting his bags down and rummaging through them, a video camera was what he took out. “Have you been here for a while now? Does anything interesting happen around this corner?”

Not much time left!

fauxmessiah:

- “It is a part of my job. What good would it be if I settled on a single place and let people that are after me know of my whereabouts? That’s why I have to change constantly.

…”

[The fact that he disappeared for almost a year didn’t made it any better. Oh, it was all in the past and he was back - wherever ‘back’ means, something really weird happened since his arrival. People that he never met before, places that he did not know about.

It all seemed like a big mess, really.

One that he did not mind being part of. With some money he could afford another place to live, and as if by a play of fate, Naoya wasn’t home right now. On the rare occasions the programmer was out, he received even a rarer visit.

… Was it a coincidence, or just a way of Izaya to inform his (probably) only friend of what happened after all this time? Heh, as if Shinra would buy something like that… how many times had the informant met this man through all the places he was ‘kidnapped’ to, and how many times he had forgotten what happened?

There was a chance that he would not forget this time, but this man wasn’t counting on that.

Valentines day… wasn’t he supposed to give something to ‘him’? Ah, he could think about that later. Asking Shinra wouldn’t do much either… mostly because the man was asking for his opinions right now.]

- “Is this a habit of asking my opinions every time Valentine’s Day gets closer? I thought you were the one in love here, no me. Shouldn’t you be the one who knows her tastes better, instead of asking me?”

[A small hint of disgust with the situation he was now. Ah, why would he help them? Maybe he was doing this for whatever traces of friendship he had with Shinra, a way of repay him for keeping company back then…?

… If you think a bit, it was Izaya who was keeping Shinra company, not the opposite. Fulfilling his role of a ‘friend’ just for the sake of his relationship with Celty. It was a bit unnerving.]

- “I have some theories on why chocolates wouldn’t work with someone that isn’t able to eat. And yet you still ask for opinions?

I am not a romantic man, you know this very well.”

[…What would Shinra say if he discovered about Izaya’s situation right now? He would probably laugh.]

Shinra accepted the other’s explanation easily. In their field of work, hiding from legal authority and from any sides of underground organisations was just another day’s work. The one difference between he and Izaya was his more sedentary lifestyle. This subject was not what he came for, so it was quickly put aside. Strangely, it still lingered at the back of his mind.

“Oh well, as long as I can get this situation fixed, then it wouldn’t really matter.”

The young man sat back on the office chair, head hanging low.

“Aah, I do take pride in being the only one who understands Celty inside out…” Literally, considering that he once dissected her many years ago. “…but this is more delicate. I try to please her every single day of the year and I suppose she’s used to my style by now. If I were to surprise her, I thought I would need a third party’s opinion.” He paused, contemplating the flaws in his logic.

“Well, if any of that mythic chocolate that you advertised so much to me about actually reached Celty’s hands, I would care less even if she couldn’t ingest any of them. …But what happened was that all stock had seemingly disappeared form the surface of the earth!”

A sigh. For disappointment and for desperation. “Now, if I could find at least something that could be physically presented to her… And that’s where you come in.” Izaya’s tone today was a bit more doubtful than usual. Instead of selling his skills and understanding, it was as if he was discrediting himself. Truth to be told, Shinra did not expect his interlocutor to be genuinely interested in his stories, but what else could he do? Out of all the people who could possibly lend him an ear, Izaya was one he trusted. Then again, who else could he talk about a dullahan with?

“Hm… Really, you can’t lend me a hand this time?”

Not much time left!

“It’s that time of the year again, you see.” That was his short introduction to the big problem that Kishitani Shinra, a part-time surgeon and a full-time lover, was having. For some reason, he deemed it reasonable to seek a form of counseling from the top trouble maker in town. That is, it was not as if he had much choice as the number of entries in his personal contact list was rather short. Shizuo was not the type to listen to his heart stories patiently. He already tried. And so, he had to turn to his other acquaintance from middle school: Orihara Izaya.

“Oh, nice flat, should I mention.” The subject deviated slightly when the young doctor finally took the time to notice the interior decorating of the room. The informant had recently moved out of Ikebukuro, but thank goodness, he was still reachable. “You move too often for my taste, though, not that I should really mind. I thought I’d see a time of peace in Ikebukuro but things never really do change.”

“Anyhow, back to my primary concern. Chocolate did not really work last year and I’m really short of ideas of what to do for this year. Ah, I’m also trying to free Celty’s schedule, but she insists on working overtime. I’m really worried…”

He sat back on one of the many office chairs of the apartment. With a sigh, he continued, “…Since it’s Valentines day and whatnot.”
